In Dubai, United Arab Emirates, West Indies head coach Daren Sammy faces a financial penalty after breaching the ICC’s Code of Conduct. Sammy has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee for violating Level 1 of the code.
Code of Conduct Breach
The infraction relates to Article 2.7, which covers public criticism or inappropriate comments concerning an incident in an international match, a player, player support personnel, a match official, or a team participating in an international match.
The sanction resulted from comments Sammy made during a media interaction at the conclusion of day two of the first Test match against Australia at Kensington Oval. He criticized a match official in reference to multiple incidents occurring throughout the day's play. Australia ultimately secured victory in the match by 159 runs on Friday.
In addition to the fine, one demerit point has been added to Daren Sammy’s disciplinary record. This marks his first offense within a 24-month period.
Sammy admitted to the offense and accepted the sanction proposed by Javagal Srinath of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. The charge was brought forward by on-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Nitin Menon, third umpire Adrian Holdstock, and fourth umpire Gregory Brathwaite. Level 1 offences carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum fine of 50 per cent of the match fee, along with one or two demerit points.
