Police Shooting At Sun Coast Adds To Rising Death Toll.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is currently investigating a fatal shooting involving the police. The incident occurred at the Sun Coast Beach Club residential complex in Bull Bay, St Thomas.

The police were conducting an operation to execute a warrant for a wanted man around 2:45 a.m.

According to the police, officers came under gunfire upon entering the property. They returned fire, resulting in injuries to Jhezde Christie. Christie later died at Kingston Public Hospital (KPH). Police seized a Ruger 9mm pistol from the scene. The target of the police operation escaped.

Investigation Details

The Morant Bay Criminal Investigation Branch is also investigating the shooting incident and the recovery of the firearm.

Reactions to the Incident

A resident of Bull Bay stated,

“Nothing nah gwan a Bull Bay, so mi a seh, ‘A who a fire dem shot deh?’ “A when the morning light, we a get to understand that a police and man inna shoot-out. What is more shocking is that a over Sun Coast,”

Statistics

As of July 3, 2024, 166 people had died in alleged confrontations with the police in Jamaica. The total number of persons killed for 2024 was 189. Between 2024 and 2025, 36 police officers have been charged following INDECOM investigations.
