The Association of Surgeons in Jamaica (ASJ) formally installed Dr. Barbara Lyle-Harper as its first female President. Her appointment marks a significant moment in the ASJ's 34-year history. The ASJ held its annual conference at The Pegasus hotel in New Kingston.
Health Minister Easton Douglas attended the ASJ's annual conference. During his opening address, Douglas praised Dr. Lyle-Harper and women in healthcare. Douglas noted that women head key medical organizations in Jamaica.
Women in Healthcare
Health Minister Easton Douglas commended the contributions of female doctors. He stated,
In this situation, our female doctors in all categories must be highly commended for the changes they are bringing about by their career choices, determination in the face of difficulties, and largely exemplary dedication to service.
Women currently comprise 40% of the 344 doctors on staff at the Health Ministry.
Dr. Lyle-Harper's Accomplishments
Dr. Barbara Lyle-Harper, an ENT Specialist, served as Vice-President and President-elect of the ASJ since 1990. She serves as a consultant to the Ministry in the Kingston Hospital Region. Easton Douglas hailed Dr. Lyle-Harper's contributions to healthcare. He also lauded her role as a model for women in medicine.
