e-Learning Jamaica (e-LJam) is celebrating its 20th anniversary of integrating technology into Jamaica’s education system. The organization works to bridge the digital divide by supporting digital learning through content, connectivity, training, and technical assistance.
e-LJam's Contributions
e-LJam played a crucial role in establishing virtual education during the COVID-19 pandemic. The entity implements initiatives such as ‘One Laptop or Tablet per Child’, ‘Tablets in Schools’, ‘Own Your Own Device’, and distributes learning kits. To further support schools and libraries, e-LJam is distributing smart boards, laptops, and other devices.
Hon. Fayval Williams, Finance and the Public Service Minister, addressed e-LJam’s 20th Anniversary Gala and Dinner at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston. Williams stated that e-LJam has done “more than just hardware” and that “the company has supported the broader ecosystem of digital learning through content, through connectivity, through training and technical support.”
Focus on Teacher Development
e-LJam prioritizes building the capacity of teachers through comprehensive training programs. The entity also promotes digital inclusion, ensuring all Jamaicans have access to essential tools and information. e-LJam collaborates to secure additional technology and infrastructure upgrades for schools throughout Jamaica.
Williams emphasized e-LJam's crucial role during the pandemic, noting, “The agency was at the forefront of getting devices into the hands of students and teachers, training educators to navigate the digital classroom, and helping school leaders reimagine how teaching and learning could happen in the virtual context.” Williams added, “We honour two decades of national service of ensuring that Jamaicans, particularly students, teachers, and education stakeholders are not left behind in an increasingly technological world.”
